Newborn Photography | KZN Midlands | Ethan

Nothing more delicious and squishy than a 5 day new little man.  Ethan was the perfect model for a Newborn shoot – he slept just about the entire time.

Little Addison – his older sister was just as sweet but despite the warm welcome I got on arrival she just didn’t want to look at the camera.  Bit like me – camera-shy :-).  Anyway – very happy with the results and thanks to Kate for being so chilled with me handling her precious bundle.

Newborn Photography has to be one of the most difficult genres – but so incredibly special and always packed with love and wonder!

What a pleasure to photograph one week old bunch of squishiness –  lady Briah.  Little newborn Gosling to Mommy  Kyles and Daddy Goosie.  Congratulations to the two of you.  May she bring only joy, happiness and fulfillment in your lives.

“Baby’s dreams must be the sweetest” –  thought Pooh (by Pooh Bear)

If only all my clients could be as easy-going and amazing as this one.  For a new Mom,  Gen was amazing.  Calm, cool and collected.  She let me “boy”-handle her little man into various positions and calmly watched as I did my thing.  And as for little Dax, what a champ.  Managed to bump his little head with my remote cable (felt so so bad) but for the most part – he seemed to take it in his stride.  Most of the time nodding off when required.  He’s a sweet, precious little bundle.  Thanks for letting  me photograph him and I hope you guys enjoy the pix!

Newborn Photography Top 10 Tips & Ideas

NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY | BABY LIAM | GORDONS BAY | 4 APRIL 2012

Newborn Photography is a challenge.  Don’t get me wrong, I LUUURVE a challenge and its not that I’m uncomfortable with Newborns,  not at all.I love to hold them and I’m confident being around them, having had two of my own. Its more the apparent rigidity of the “the backdrop”, “the props”, “the little hats and beanies” that seems to go along with the whole “newborn shoot”.  Like most of us, I went out and bought a few of them.  I’ve got the black backdrop. Even bought some fun material for a bit of variety, but I have realised that aside from the fact that everyone seems to be doing this and Newborn shoots are all looking rather similar, its just not my style.

I want to tell more of a story. To somehow convey the scene I was seeing and how the people involved were feeling at the time. Recording the simplicity, love and beauty that is a Newborn child!

As my own style is emerging, I’ve realized that aside from telling a story, keeping things real, original and emotive – I like to feel out the essence of the situation that I’m shooting. Does that make sense? Semantics is loosing me (ha!)

Anyway – this is a little shoot i did with the very delicious Liam who is in fact brand new son to one of my husbands’ cousins (work that one out frederick). He was way way more wakker than I expected him to be at 6 days old but precious-ness personified. We didn’t have much time as we were on our way to the Breede River for the Easter Weekend so – snatched moments with mom were all we could manage. Wish I had had the whole morning and a bit more light.

TOP 10 TIPS FOR NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY:

  1. Turn off your flash.  Look for that beautiful natural light coming through a bedroom window or illuminating the changing area in the nursery.
  2. Make a list of the images you want to get especially that one shot you can’t live without’
  3. Photograph newborns between 1 – 9 days as they usually a lot sleepier and less active
  4. SAFETY – prime importance here obviously.  Bring a beanbag and use composite shots where necessary.
  5. Keeping the area warm.  You need to leave the shoot sweating.  Consider bringing a heater.
  6. Get close.  Those macro shots of fingers, toes, drool, wrinkles, little belly buttons – irresistable
  7. Put them in and on things.  Find stuff that is personal to the family.  Old blankies.  Beautiful throws.  All the new blankies the baby has yet to use.  Gorgeous fruit bowls.  Suitcases.  Anything antique or vintagey.
  8. Relax.  Its important for the mom (especially if she’s a first timer) to feel that the photographer knows what she is doing.  If you give off relaxed vibes, handling the newborn baby with confidence, the mom will tend to relax.
  9. Make sure you wash your hands (often).
  10. Always support the newborn babies head in upright poses.
